Millet is one of the first cereals grown in Europe, and its main market today is bird feed, where its value is valued through Granexper® contractual agreements.
The Proso millet varieties LISA and KORNBERGER offer earlier harvests compared to white millet varieties such as SUNRISE, HORIZON, and EARLYBIRD, with higher value in the professional bird feed sector.
Why grow millet?
CHOOSING A SECOND SHORT-CYCLE CROP has two key advantages:
• First advantage: Take advantage of an early pea or barley harvest
• Second advantage: Benefit from a real break in the weed cycle

Common millet (Panicum miliaceum) is a C4 plant, like maize, with the advantage of having a very short growing cycle (80–100 days).
Seed quality is essential to ensure quick emergence in warmed soils (from 12°C), at a sowing depth of 2 cm and a seeding rate of around 25 kg/ha.
Advantages of millet:
• Adaptable to all soil types
• Requires less water than sorghum
• Not expensive to grow and low input requirements
• No need for specialized equipment for sowing or harvesting
It is a cleaning crop, if its establishment is managed carefully (e.g., false seeding and favourable conditions for a quick emergence).
